Local heritage society

Zavičajno društvo “Sveti Josip” Cerje Letovaničko

Since 2018, the local heritage society Zavičajno društvo “Sveti Josip” has had a vocal group that keeps the traditions and cultural heritage of the area alive through song. Its repertoire includes traditional songs that were once sung in the fields, forests, orchards and vineyards and tell of the life, love and customs of this region.

The vocal group has around ten female members whose a cappella performances show the beauty and power of the human voice as the oldest instrument. They have performed at numerous events across Croatia. The group is led by Dubravka Jelekovac, who has also written several songs dedicated to Cerje.

The association and local tradition

Zavičajno društvo “Sveti Josip” Cerje Letovaničko (local heritage society) is based in the Municipality of Lekenik and is part of the rich cultural heritage of Turopolje, Posavina and Pokuplje. Cultural and arts societies and associations preserve folk costumes, songs, dances and customs and present them at festivals and folklore shows.

You can see local societies perform at events such as Jurjevo, the Days of Ban Jelačić and Postman Klempaj or Advent in Lekenik – check the dates in the events calendar, and read more about local traditions on the Cultural Heritage page.

The work of associations that cherish folk customs, song and dance also plays an important role in presenting Lekenik to visitors, and folklore groups often perform at events in the municipality. Folklore groups from all over Croatia are also brought together by the Croatian Cultural Council (Hrvatski sabor kulture).
